BM xmas party

BM xmas party

Broadway Malyan architecture firm is located right between Restauradores and Rossio. Though I'm there every day, seldom do I sketch this privileged view over the bustling squares. The December weather was warm enough to leave the windows open, while the snacks and the drinks were set. BM used the King's Room, where the king used to wait for the train in Rossio station, to hold its info evening - a wrap-up of the work the company had during the previous year, a few personal experiences and research from co-workers, and a glimpse of the…Read more
Rua do Século (antiga Rua Formosa)

Rua do Século (antiga Rua Formosa)

From the Alto da Cotovia, many stories have rolled down the hill - a cleptomaniac arsonist, doomed construction sites, an underground water reservoir that still exists to this date, with an unconspicuous underground path to São Pedro de Alcântara and branching out in all directions of the hill of the Jesuits. All these stories are already better told that I could ever tell them, right here. Our story is a much simpler one to tell: having depleted the Roque Gameiro sites in our jurisdiction (those which our lunchtime allows), Pedro Alves, Tomás Reis and…Read more

Road to the USk Symposium #2

USk Manchester Symposium day -3 / Simpósio USk em Manchester dia -3 No trains run between Edge Hill and Lime Street on Sunday, but the walk is a mere half an hour long. Walking besides the University of Liverpool grounds, one ends up straight in the Walker Art Gallery, a free access museum with a varied collection of paintings from the middle ages onward to the early 20th century. With many apologies to art scholars everywhere, I must confess that my favorite thing about ancient art museums is searching for weird stories for the characters…Read more
Festival Med #1

Festival Med #1

Urban Sketchers Algarve got the Municipality of the small Algarvian town of Loulé to invite a group of sketchers to record one of the largest and most peculiar events in the southern part of the country - Festival Med. It started out thirteen years ago as a Mediterranean music fest, but went on to become a well-known world music festival. The peculiar thing about Med is that it happens on several stages inside the old town. A complex system of guards and fences keeps out those without ticket - thus, inadvertently recreating the market tribute system of…Read more
DEKL

DEKL

Not only catholic bells toll in Lisboa. The DEKL (Deutsche Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Lissabon), commonly known in the city as 'the German Church', takes pride in claiming for itself "the only protestant bell, calling for prayers in the Iberian Peninsula". This historical bell lays upon the tower of the 1934 building designed by the german modernist architect Otto Bartning, which used to stand nearly alone in the area once known as Palhavã, but has since been engulfed by a central business district. Em Lisboa não dobram apenas sinos católicos. A DEKL (Deutsche Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Lissabon), conhecida…Read more
