Drawing Ground Zero

Last weekend, the iconic MAAT in Lisboa opened its doors to a group of sketchers, willing to see reality in a different way. In a workshop guided by Tomás Reis and I – Drawing Ground Zero – participants learned how to deconstruct their preconceptions on sketching, and pushed themselves to unify what they saw in a single-minded gesture, line by line.

Through demos and exercises on topographic drawing, the group produced drawings without edges, volumes instead of shapes, meshes of reality based on surfaces and textures alone.

The workshop was heavily based on João Louro‘s exhibition, Linguistic Ground Zero, featured in the museum, where the leveling of concepts and language were key to understanding the world from a different perspective.

Afterwards, all the participants got a free tour around the exhibitions of the museum. The reception we had at MAAT was outstanding, and we have to thank all the people there for having and supporting us, and to Patrícia Canastreiro for her excellent photo reportage!

I was born on the southwestern-most tip of Europe, in Lagos, Portugal. A childhood of legos and sandcastles led me to architecture school, but an adolescence of doodling drove me to sketching and later to illustration. I like to sketch, to travel and to chop vegetables into tiny manageable bits. I also like maps. The older the better!
