Mário Linhares kicked off the Lisbon 10×10 long term programme on the 10th of May, by holding a class in the offices of Diário de Notícias (DN), one of the top daily newspapers in the country. Attendance was sold out, almost all of the instructors were present and there were a few guest stars that were visiting the country at the same time. Omar Jaramillo from Berlin, was staying on behalf of Urban Sketchers Portugal as an instructor and lecturer, as part of the Lisbon capital of Ibero-American culture celebrations programme. Kasia Szybka from Kraków, Eduardo Bajzek from São Paulo and Rob Sketcherman and his wife Louise, from Hong Kong were in town after being invited by the Portuguese tourism office to sketch in the sanctuary of Fátima in the 100 years celebration of the apparitions of the Holy Mother and Pope Francis’ visit.

After a tour of the DN headquarter offices and a brief introduction on how to compose a news report by reporter Marina Almeida, Mário, who’d previously asked everyone to bring a small object that was dear to each participant, challenged the class to sketch their own object and write a small text that would reveal their relationship with that object. Then they got to choose their favorite amongst the other objects to compose straightforward unattached sketch and text, showing a bit of the office context in the process.

I was born on the southwestern-most tip of Europe, in Lagos, Portugal. A childhood of legos and sandcastles led me to architecture school, but an adolescence of doodling drove me to sketching and later to illustration. I like to sketch, to travel and to chop vegetables into tiny manageable bits. I also like maps. The older the better!
